Welcome
The Kiwanis Club of Elmira was chartered in 1974, and has since grown into a vibrant, involved community service club with approximately 35 members. We raise money through a variety of events, including the Elmira Lobsterfest, Maple Syrup Festival, Beat Rocks the Block and the Elmira Santa Claus Parade.
Some of the worthwhile community causes we support include Meals on Wheels, Kiwanis Transit, the West Montrose Covered Bridge Carol Sing, the Elmira Youth Centre, Elmira Seniors' day facility, Woolwich Christmas Goodwill Food Drive, Adopt-a-Road, Woolwich Counselling Centre and the Elmira Kiwanis Music Festival and many more. We have also funded and built several playgrounds throughout Elmira and the surrounding area.
From 1998 until 2009, the club ran the Dragon Boat Festival of Waterloo Region at the Laurel Creek Conservation Area. The University of Waterloo Dragon Boat Club has taken over the running of the Festival in 2010. It is scheduled to be run on Saturday, August 7, 2010. A large portion of the funds from the Dragon Boat Festival went to support the Grand River Hospital's Childbirth programs. Over the past eight/nine years, this event has contributed over $150,000 to the hospital. Another portion went to the Woolwich Memorial Centre.
Although Kiwanis' focus is children, and particularly children under age of five, our club's unwritten mandate is to support the most worthwhile causes related to any group in our community. As you can see, we have a very active and involved membership!
